Things have changed a lot since 1980 – especially in the Poconos. My parents honeymooned at a now-defunct Pennsylvania resort in the mid- ‘80s, and I still get a kick out of looking at the photos. Think champagne glass bathtubs, heart-shaped beds and red painted everything.
Luckily, the days of tacky red honeymoon suites went out with florescent tube tops and slap bracelets. While the Poconos remains a popular destination for couples and newlyweds, romance in heart of the Pennsylvania countryside has become a bit more genteel. Champagne baths gave way to jetted spa tubs and uncomfortable heart beds were retired in favor of plush, luxurious pillow-top mattresses.
Skytop Lodge was just getting into the lodging business in the 80s, after decades as a private club. In its early years, the resort attracted New York jetsetters during the cool summers. Today, it’s a popular year-round destination for weddings and romantic getaways, with visitors from across the globe. If you and your special someone are planning a Poconos vacation, here are a few of the updated events and activities you’ll find.
Then: Honeymoon suites looked like something out of an Edgar Allen Poe story.
Now: Stay in Style
Guest accommodations range from cozy, charming streamside cottages with views of the stream or golf course to fireplace rooms and executive Jacuzzi suites in the Inn at Skytop. Newly redesigned rooms and suites inside the main lodge feature custom wallpaper, wi-fi access and garden or water views.
Then: Chintz, lavender and daisies were splashed everywhere. Traditional weddings and dry chicken dinners were the norm.
Now: Tie a Luxurious Knot
Here at Skytop Lodge, guests can get married at one of four beautiful outdoor locations on our 5,500-acre property, followed by a reception for family and friends at our Streamside Lodge, Evergreen Ballroom or Lakeview Dining Room. The venues are tailored for wedding size and style; for example, the ballroom accommodates up to 300 guests for a formal party, while the lodge would be ideal for a delectable BBQ rehearsal dinner with the family.
Then: Tiki bars served up colorful cocktails and tiny finger foods in a “lounge lizard” atmosphere.
Now: A Feast for The Eyes (and the Mouth)
You and your sweetheart can enjoy breathtaking mountain views and modern culinary delights in our Windsor Dining Room or Lakeview Restaurant (reservations required). There are also several adult-friendly watering holes throughout the property, including the Fairview Bar overlooking our private 18-hole golf course, cozy Library Lounge and the Taproom, a late-night haunt that’s stocked with top-shelf liqueurs and local craft brews.
In addition to dining and lodging, you’ll find dozens of couple-friendly activities such as swimming, massages, horseback riding and hiking around our 5,500-acre property. While the Poconos may be for more than just lovers now, there’s always romance brewing somewhere at Skytop Lodge. Contact us today to inquire about romantic activities and packages in the Poconos.
